Cenote Yal-Ku

The Yal-Kú Lagoon or Caleta Yal-Kú as it is also called. It is located in Akumal, a town between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. A mixture of fresh and salt water, as it has a connection with the sea.

It is 45 minutes from Playa del Carmen. You can get there by private car (which is recommended, if you will not walk a lot from the town to the cove), by taxi or public transport. You take the latter on Av. 2 Norte between 20 and 15 Norte, in the center of Playa del Carmen. They are some vans bound for Tulum (Don t forget to mention to the driver that you will get off in Akumal).

Once you are in Akumal Pueblo, you can take a taxi to Laguna Yal-kú or walk 2.5 kilometers.

The Yal-Kú Lagoon is surrounded by vegetation and fauna such as reptiles and exotic birds. Inside it you can see a variety of colorful fish. Even if you are lucky, you will be able to see rays and barracudas.

The day we arrived was the rainy season and the cove had a green hue and the water was a bit cloudy, so we could not appreciate the fauna so well like other days, when the water is completely crystalline and conducive to seeing all the tropical fish.

The advantage of Caleta Yal-Kú is that you will not find as many people, as in popular parks or cenotes, since it is as a secret place, which has not been given so much publicity.

This fact makes it possible to swim freely, recommended for children or people who do not know anything very well; It is shallow and has a very slight current.

It is forbidden to use sunscreen and repellent. Avoid using chemicals on the skin because they can damage the ecosystem.
