Cenote Xtoloc

The Xtoloc Cenote, which, although smaller in diameter than the Sacred Cenote, was very important for the population of Chichén Itzá as a source of water.

The name Xtoloc comes from the Mayan word that means “iguana” and it is gave this name because they live in the region. We can still admire them in many buildings and in other Mayan archaeological sites such as Tulum and Uxmal.

Around this Cenote there are small temples like the one that bears his name (Xtoloc Temple); there are also columns with reliefs found around it.

The Cenote is in front of a Temple with the same name in Sacbé 15, which runs from the square of the Group of Thousand Columns to the group of buildings of the Ossuary. < br>
